Life With My Boys
All three of your sons—Kingston, 11, Zuma, 8, and Apollo, 3—are home for the summer. Is it crazy having a full house?
It’s a relief. That routine of homework is just ugh. By the end you’re ready to have them home and do fun stuff. Today we found the ice-cream maker in the garage.
Do they know how much of a rock star Mom was in her No Doubt days?
They don’t really care! I was in a band and free my whole life, so I always thought I’d do whatever I wanted and take them out of school. But I’ve learned they feel safest when there are boundaries. They only want you to care about them, like, “You’re my mom.”
Did they have any input in the upcoming doll line inspired by your Nick Jr. show Kuu Kuu Harajuku?
I got the prototypes [for the dolls, available this fall], and Apollo’s chosen “Angel” for [Stefani’s boyfriend] Blake [Shelton]. Kingston’s excited ’cause he might be in an episode [of the show]. He’s like, “Can my voice be in it?”
What’s your biggest challenge as a mom?
It’s a constant fear of “How am I gonna make sure these kids are good people?” It’s fun to watch them become humans, but then there will be other things like, “Can I get my ears pierced?” I’m like, “Um, no.”
