Stefani’s Style School
Quiet at the back! It’s time to learn how to look good for less with our special fashion tutor, Gwen Stefani…

Hi Gwen! What’s your style right now?
We’re getting tour costumes together and you can imagine the amount of effort that takes: decide what to wear, when you’re going to change, high heels versus tennis shoes… I’m wearing the same costumes on stage every night for six months. At the moment I’m not sick of them but after a month, I’ll be like, ‘Oh my god, not my jail outfit again!’
What are your secret tips for looking good on a budget?
I’ve been into thrift store shopping and making my own clothes since I was a little girl. Find things that reflect your personality, I don’t really see any rules when it comes to wearing clothes because there’s no rules to having a personality!
Do you still make your own clothes now?
Yeah, I’m basically doing what I’ve been doing my whole life, just on a larger scale. I can print my own fabrics or get amazing crystals for my costumes, where before I was sewing on sequins!
What’s you make-up must-have?
Probably my lipstick – an obvious answer but true. It’s what my husband likes me in and I definitely try to please him!
Any beauty tips?
It’s about self-exploration, whatever makes you feel good. I was always the girl who after school every day would be like, ‘Ask your mum if we can play with her make-up!’ and then we’d do that for like four hours! I would burn everybody with the curling iron, I’d do make-overs on everyone. I was a make-up artist in a mall when I was 17 so it’s always something I’ve been into.
Do you ever go out without make-up on?
Sometimes. Everyone has criticised me for wearing too much make-up but I’ve also made a career out of it! I’m not wearing any make-up right at this minute, I’ve a cold and I’m sitting in my hotel room getting ready to work out.
Do you find it hard to stay slim?
Oh, yeah. I have to work at it and it sucks! But I also enjoy wearing cute clothes, and I’m really vain!
What do you think about size zero girls?
I think every girl has some kind of body issue, whether it’s being thin or fat or whatever… We all spend way too much time thinking and talking about it. I’ve been all kinds of weights and people seem to like me and the different versions I’ve been!
How do you cope with the intrusion into your private life?
I don’t know. I always look at it like the weirdness is never going to last forever and to enjoy it while you’ve got it.
We heard that you once hid on the floor of a car to escape the paps when you where pregnant!
Photographers would basically be outside of my house every single day waiting for me to leave. My brother came over one time and they didn’t recognise his car so I got in the back and hid!
Have you got any tips for bagging a rock star boy?
[Laughs] I dunno. Hmmm… Getting any kind of boyfriend, no matter what they do, is hard! Good luck!
Did you do the chasing with your hubby?
I was the girl who had two boyfriends her whole life and then married one of them. I was a goody two-shoes. Tony was in my band and we were together from when I was 17 for eight years. Then I met Gavin [Rossdale] and married him. It’s my personality I guess. I would hate to go on a date. It’s just not me.
How did you meet Gavin?
I met him at a concert we were both playing in LA and we were on the same record label and they introduced us.
Tell us about your latest single, 4 In The Morning. It’s very different…
I guess so. It’s a bit of an underdog. It’s just a song I wrote with Tony from No Doubt. We actually started writing it when I was pregnant but we didn’t finish it, we put it away thinking it was rubbish. Six months later I found the song and was like, Oh wow, it’s really good! So we finished it and it’s probably my favourite song on the record, the one song I want to rewind all the time.
