But back to the aforementioned conversation at dinner, a lively Friday-night curried-chicken supper given by Helen and Tim Schifter at their commodious house on the East End of Long Island for guests of honor Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani, who, in her capacity as a fashion designer, works with Tim on L.A.M.B. and her new Harajuku Lovers line.

Gwen isn't a diary keeper, although she used to be. "I was very into journaling several years ago," she said. "I had the Sylvia Plath-Joni Mitchell phase, but please, right now I am doing dance records," she demurred in a charming, self-effacing way. "It's not that deep; you know what I am saying?"
