Blake Shelton Sounds Off on His CMA Nominations – and Miranda's 9!

Blake Shelton found out about his three CMA nominations from wife Miranda Lambert, who called him with the news Wednesday, while they were in New York City together.

“She got up early and went some place out of the city to ride horses and on her way she found out about the nominations and called me,” Shelton tells PEOPLE. “I said, ‘What did I get?’ And she told me two or three things. Then I said, ‘Well, what did you get?’ and she said, ‘Oh, nine.'”

“I said, ‘That’s got to be a record!’ She said, ‘Oh, well I tied my record from last year.’ She says it halfway embarrassed. If it was anybody else, she probably wouldn’t even talk about it, but with me she’s pretty excited about it,” says Shelton.

The proud husband is already thinking ahead to where the couple might display all that hardware.

“I mean, my God! I don’t know, is it even possible to get nine? Where do you put that much s– if she wins it all?” says Shelton. “It’s just unbelievable, she’s this unique individual that’s not like anybody else and it’s cool to see her be recognized for that.”

While Shelton is clearly thrilled about the couple’s nods, there’s one other act he says he’ll be rooting for come November. “The nomination for the Swon Brothers [for vocal duo] is the coolest thing,” he says. “I’m so excited for them. I know through my involvement with them with The Voice that they’ve worked really hard and to see them capitalize on the opportunity is just so gratifying.”
