The Voice Coaches

MATT LAUER: All right. Al, thanks very much. Now to The Voice on TODAY, the superstar coaches from NBC's Emmy-winning music competition are here, Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton. Guys, ladies, good morning, good to see you.

GWEN STEFANI: Good morning.

ADAM LEVINE: Hey, Matt.

MATT LAUER: Big news since the last time we got together, the Emmy Award for the Best Primetime Reality Competition Show.

GWEN STEFANI: That's amazing.

BLAKE SHELTON: Where is-- I haven't got mine.

MATT LAUER: You haven't got the statue?

ADAM LEVINE: I haven't got mine.

BLAKE SHELTON: Yeah. They ship over several months later or something.

MATT LAUER: Yeah, exactly. Which of you deserves the most credit for the Emmy win?

GWEN STEFANI: I think it's me.

MATT LAUER: Do you? Why?

GWEN STEFANI: Yeah. The newest member--

MATT LAUER: Yeah.

GWEN STEFANI: --just taking and lifting everything.

BLAKE SHELTON: Yeah. We can't win crap until you came along.

ADAM LEVINE: Yeah, it's true.

MATT LAUER: No coincidence maybe that the year you guys win the Emmy, it's also the year that the season ends with Pharrell's win?

BLAKE SHELTON: No coincidence.

MATT LAUER: No?

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: No coincidence.

ADAM LEVINE: Zero, zero.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: No.

MATT LAUER: What does it mean? I mean, it's-- we don't do jobs like this for awards or the money as you tell me all the time, we do it for the joy of it. But what does the award mean, what does it do to the mood on the set?

ADAM LEVINE: It's awesome. It's such a cool thing just to have that, and we've won two, right?

BLAKE SHELTON: You're talking about the award?

MATT LAUER: Did you win two?

BLAKE SHELTON: Are you talking about the Emmy or the--

ADAM LEVINE: What are we talking about?

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: I'm sorry. It's a little weird. I'm sorry.

BLAKE SHELTON: We're talking about when we-- when I actually win the show or when the show wins the Emmy?

ADAM LEVINE: The show.

MATT LAUER: He won the show.

ADAM LEVINE: Oh, he won the show. I'm sorry.

MATT LAUER: That's when you win the Emmy.

ADAM LEVINE: It's early, it's early, I'm sorry.

MATT LAUER: Wow, this is tough.

ADAM LEVINE: This is-- no, we're good. We're good. We're warming up.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: For me, I just think like it's amazing for everyone that works on the show like I think in terms of production, like, we got the coolest people, the nicest people, like everyone speaks like a lot of good energy. And for me, I know I show up to see these two not only go at it but at the same time like they're just funny people and, I mean, you just-- there's not a-- there's not a dead day.

MATT LAUER: Each one of you became coaches because you have a resume, because you've got a great track record as-- track record as-- as recording artist and musician, but what has the show given you that you never got from the other side of your career?

GWEN STEFANI: Oh, my God. For me, it's given me so much inspiration. I mean, I can't even-- I think I wouldn't even have my new record if it wasn't for the show.

MATT LAUER: Why?

GWEN STEFANI: The show is like, for me, I think it might be the funniest thing I've ever done.

ADAM LEVINE: I agree.

GWEN STEFANI: And Adam wrote me an e-mail when I was first, like, considering doing the show. He's like, you got to do this show, it's so great and-- and he was so right.

ADAM LEVINE: I told her she was going to be so inspired and have the time her life because for all of us it-- that's exactly what happened. It's just one of those things where you-- you aren't sure what you're getting yourself into. But then once you do it, you realize, oh, my God. The-- the coolest thing about it is how rewarding it is to know that you have-- you have something you can offer, you know, you can help these guys. I don't think you ever - until The Voice without a-- without-- you don't even realize that you have anything to offer these people.

MATT LAUER: It-- it brings a whole different level of exposure. You sent a tweet recently, you went through a divorce. I'm sorry about that. But you also tweeted recently, "The stuff I read about myself blows my mind." You tweeted that to your fourteen million followers.

GWEN STEFANI: Whoa. You're popular.

ADAM LEVINE: Some mad followers.

BLAKE SHELTON: Very, very popular these days.

MATT LAUER: What's the craziest rumor you've heard about yourself?

BLAKE SHELTON: The craziest that I've heard about myself?

MATT LAUER: Yeah.

BLAKE SHELTON: Oh, my gosh. I don't even--

ADAM LEVINE: I've heard that you--

BLAKE SHELTON: Literally, I don't know. I need to go to the newsstand.

ADAM LEVINE: I heard that you are nice.

BLAKE SHELTON: That is-- that's ridiculous.

ADAM LEVINE: I heard-- I heard--

BLAKE SHELTON: That is ridiculous.

ADAM LEVINE: I heard you were super-duper talented.

BLAKE SHELTON: Hm-Mm. Hm-Mm.

MATT LAUER: Now I know why we separated you two. Gwen, you have a new music video-- video out for I Used To Love You. Can I play a little portion of that?

GWEN STEFANI: Oh, my God, please play it.

MATT LAUER: Do you mind? Here we go. Listen.

(Excerpt from Gwen Stefani's I Used To Love You)

MATT LAUER: Because your personal life has also been in the headlines, fans are looking at this and they're-- are they misinterpreting something here or is it all right there in front of us in terms of the meaning of the song?

GWEN STEFANI: Oh, my God, put me on the spot. I'm like whoa, whoa. I think I'm-- that was-- that's--

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: But that's why we have this platform right now.

GWEN STEFANI: Okay. Good idea, Pharrell.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: That's right.

GWEN STEFANI: Okay. What I'll say about that is that I've never put a record out where I'm actually going through things in real-time. Like the Tragic Kingdom, I wrote that record over a three-year period and then it came out and it was like two years on tour. And it's like this long drawn- out thing. This is like I wrote that song like a couple weeks ago. And then I sat in front of a camera in-- in a dressing room randomly, not making a video, just to do like some video for the screens behind me. And then it went out and it was the video. It's like all very real.

MATT LAUER: Happy with the reaction to it?

GWEN STEFANI: It's just nice. It's nice to do music and-- and have that support from everybody. Even I don't know these people, but from whatever I feel their energy and their love coming back at me and that's really comforting.

MATT LAUER: That's nice.

ADAM LEVINE: Awesome.

MATT LAUER: What's with the hair? You went bald for this season, right?

BLAKE SHELTON: Oh, gosh.

MATT LAUER: Oh, God?

ADAM LEVINE: You just have to do-- you had to go there.

MATT LAUER: It was no good?

ADAM LEVINE: You had to give him more fuel for the fire over here.

BLAKE SHELTON: Looks like-- you look like Squidward.

MATT LAUER: Squidward? Yeah? How did it feel being part of Baldation?

ADAM LEVINE: You-- you look like an idiot.

BLAKE SHELTON: You look like-- you look like Dr. Evil.

ADAM LEVINE: You look like-- you look like the dumbest person I know.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: You get it, Matt? Do you see why?

ADAM LEVINE: You're my dumbest friend.

(Cross talking)

MATT LAUER: We know we're live here, right?

BLAKE SHELTON: You look like a sperm cell. You look like a sperm cell--

(Cross talking)

ADAM LEVINE: Of all my friends, you're my dumbest.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: Now you understand?

BLAKE SHELTON: I'm glad that I have a friend.

GWEN STEFANI: You're my dumbest--

(Cross talking)

MATT LAUER: I don't even know why you're still on this show. I really don't.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: I show up for this every day.

MATT LAUER: Yeah.

GWEN STEFANI: So good.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: Every day.

GWEN STEFANI: It makes-- it brings us so much joy.

MATT LAUER: Are you and the guys doing the Super Bowl halftime show?

ADAM LEVINE: No. But we want to. So hopefully we can make enough of a racket so that they'll--

MATT LAUER: I heard it was negotiations were underway.

ADAM LEVINE: That's--

BLAKE SHELTON: Yeah, I did--

ADAM LEVINE: No, no, that is--

BLAKE SHELTON: I read that same thing too.

ADAM LEVINE: None of that is true, but it'll be nice to-- it'll nice for this to kind of be a self-fulfilling prophecy here.

MATT LAUER: Okay.

ADAM LEVINE: So let's get this going. Let's-- we want to play the Super Bowl people.

GWEN STEFANI: Super Bowl.

MATT LAUER: Yeah. Cool.

ADAM LEVINE: We want to do this Super Bowl. Let's do it.

MATT LAUER: By the way-- can I-- my only complaint about this show, your show, is that I don't think Carson gets enough credit in promos and things like that.

BLAKE SHELTON: Can I say this?

MATT LAUER: Yes.

BLAKE SHELTON: Carson is the reason nobody has gone on to be a star after-- after they have won The Voice. He actually is the reason.

ADAM LEVINE: You know what? I don't agree with you often.

CARSON DALY: That's fine.

MATT LAUER: Do you have a question, Carson?

ADAM LEVINE: He's not happy. You can see it. Look at his eyes.

MATT LAUER: Do you have a question, Mister Daly?

CARSON DALY: I do. I'm glad you brought it up. Look at this-- look-- look at this tweet we got here. This comes from TRL RULZ 99. My-- my favorite part of The Voice is the host. He is magic. So nice. What do you like most about him?

ADAM LEVINE: You are-- you're a magic man. We love you so much.

GWEN STEFANI: So good.

ADAM LEVINE: I love you.

BLAKE SHELTON: Is that your own Twitter account?

MATT LAUER: Maybe.

CARSON DALY: I don't know. Maybe.

MATT LAUER: Maybe.

ADAM LEVINE: @CarsonDaly says.

MATT LAUER: Yeah. Guys, good to have you here.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: Thank you.

GWEN STEFANI: Thank you.

MATT LAUER: It's always a pleasure. And you can catch The Voice tonight
